AdBlue is a fluid required by many new diesel trucks and buses in Europe to destroy harmful pollutants in the exhaust gases.

What is AdBlue?
Non-toxic aqueous urea solution for heavy-duty diesel powered vehicles that meet Euro IV and Euro V standards. AdBlue protects nature and your SCR systems by destroying harmful pollutants in the exhaust gases. AdBlue enables your vehicle to meet Euro 4 and Euro 5 standard. Classified under the minimum risk category of transportable fluids.

AdBlue is the registered trademark for AUS32 (Aqueous Urea Solution 32.5%) and is used in a process called selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to reduce emissions of oxides of nitrogen from the exhaust of diesel engined motor vehicles. As the name AUS32 would suggest, it is a 32.5% solution of high-purity urea in demineralised water that is clear, non-toxic and is safe to handle. However, it can be corrosive for some metals, and must be stored and transported using the correct materials. The AdBlue trademark is currently held by the German Association of the Automobile Industry (VDA), who ensure quality standards are maintained in accordance with ISO 22241 specifications.

It is a clear, non-toxic solution of a chemical called urea. It is safe to handle and does not harm the environment. AdBlue is stored in a separate tank near the diesel tank, and is not added to the diesel. Every truck and bus manufacturer in Europe has models that require AdBlue.

The quality of AdBlue is important and this is controlled by the DIN V 70070 standard.

AdBlue is used by an advanced pollution control technology installed in the exhaust system called Selective Catalytic Reduction or SCR. SCR systems work by reacting AdBlue with the harmful NOx gases in the exhaust to form harmless water and nitrogen. NOx is an abbreviation for nitrogen oxide gases, which are produced during the combustion process in diesel engines and are one of the main components of atmospheric pollution.

It is important to ensure that you always have an adequate supply of AdBlue in the tank. If a truck or bus with an SCR system is operated without AdBlue, then there is risk that the complex SCR equipment will be damaged, and the emissions will not meet legal requirements. The driver would also experience a loss of engine power until the vehicle is refilled with AdBlue.

AdBlue is a made from a chemical called urea (sometimes called carbamide) dissolved in pure water. Urea is a synthetic product generally manufactured from natural gas, and is used in chemical fertilizers, plastics, and cosmetics. AdBlue is not made from recycled agricultural products.

AdBlue can be used in all European conditions. If the temperature of AdBlue drops below -11 °C in extremely cold weather, it freezes. Therefore AdBlue pumps in the Nordic countries and other cold areas are heated to resist winter problems. Some SCR trucks have heating systems, which ensures stable operation of the SCR system, even in the coldest weather. AdBlue that is frozen is not damaged in any way, and can be used as soon as it has defrosted.
